Hurricane Maria: Here’s How to Help Victims in the Ravaged Caribbean
by Jason Duaine Hahn @ PEOPLE.com
Wed Sep 20 16:53:14 PDT 2017
On early Wednesday, Hurricane Maria made landfall on the 100-mile-long island of Puerto Rico, causing such tremendous damage with its 155-mph winds that it knocked out power for all 3.5 million residents.
Maria killed at least nine people on Dominica before it moved to Puerto Rico, where it toppled trees, tore roofs from buildings, and damaged reservoirs and rivers that—along with heavy rain—have caused severe flooding. Though the hurricane is expected to move toward the Dominican Republic late Wednesday, Puerto Rico and Dominica will feel the
Though the hurricane is expected to move toward the Dominican Republic late Wednesday, Puerto Rico and Dominica will feel the effects of the storm for a long time to come. This comes just two weeks after ferocious Hurricane Irma destroyed much of the U.S. Virgin Islands and killed three people in Puerto Rico.
If you’d like to help out in helping victims of the storm, here some verified organizations assisting in the efforts.
Unidos Por Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico First Lady Beatriz Rosselló helped to establish Unidos Por Puerto Rico to help victims of Maria on the island, and donations can be sent by way of their website.
Dominica Hurricane Relief Fund
Much of Dominica is in need of aid after Maria destroyed much of the small island. Officials say 70 to 80 percent of the island’s structures sustained storm damage, whether it be ripped-off roofs or complete destruction. Donations can be sent to the JustGiving page of the organization here.
ConPRmetidos
The nonprofit is based in Puerto Rico, and is accepting donations that will be first be used for the immediate needs of food, shelter and water, and later transitioned to long-term recovery efforts. You can donate to the organization here.
UNICEF
The United Nations fund is currently leading efforts to help young victims of both Irma and Maria, and the earthquake in Mexico. “We put children first in emergencies, committed to addressing the needs of the most vulnerable kids in the world,” the organization says. You can donate to them through their website.
GoFundMe
The fundraising website has collected a running list of dozens of pages that are collecting funds for hurricane relief in Dominica and Puerto Rico.
Puerto Rican Hurricane Relief Fund
Started by a collection of Los Angeles-based groups connected to the Puerto Rican community, the Puerto Rican Hurricane Relief Fund will collect money until September 29, 2017, when they will pass the donations to nonprofits on the island.

Chip and Joanna Gaines Share Their Hilarious First Date Story
by Megan Stein @ PEOPLE.com
Wed Jun 15 08:48:44 PDT 2016
Chip and Joanna Gaines are the definition of marriage goals, but their relationship didn’t necessarily have a fairytale start.
In the first chapter of The Magnolia Story, released as a sneak peek today, the Fixer Upper dream team spills the details of how they met — and it wasn’t exactly love at first sight.
Joanna agreed to go out on a date with Chip after meeting him and his roommate “Hot John” — who she actually tried to approach minutes earlier, but was too shy — in the waiting room of her dad’s auto shop. She had second thoughts, however, after Chip arrived an hour and a half late to pick her up.

“He didn’t apologize for being late, either. He had so much confidence. I don’t know. I can’t explain it. Only Chip could be an hour and a half late and have no one mad about it,” Joanna writes.

The chapter continues to describe the timeline of their relationship, which didn’t actually start until months after they first went out, when Chip (in typical guy fashion) finally called Joanna back.
“I’d made a bet with Hot John to see who could hold out the longest before calling our dates back,” Chip writes “I really wanted that fifty dollars from John! That’s the only reason I didn’t call.”
After they went out a second time, the rest was history.

Mandy Moore Reveals Her Major Home Renovation Is Still Down to the Studs: 'Will We Be in Here by December?'
by Megan Stein @ PEOPLE.com
Wed Sep 20 15:48:06 PDT 2017
Mandy Moore’s home remodel is well underway!
The This Is Us star is in the midst of a major renovation and is sharing updates about the process on social media. From retro stone to a massive pool, it’s safe to say the newly engaged actress’s future pad is going to be a show-stopper.
“Lots happening here,” Moore, 33, says in an Instagram Stories video tour of the midcentury pad, which she bought in January for a reported $2.56 million, in full-on construction mode.
The future kitchen — that already boasts floor-to-ceiling windows — is slated to include terrazzo floors. She later asks viewers to vote 1, 2, or 3 from her selection of samples, admitting, “I’m still feeling number two.”
Meanwhile, the master bedroom she’ll share with fiance Taylor Goldsmith is being prepped for “a major built in bed situation,” according to the below snap Moore borrowed from her designer, Sarah Sherman Samuel.
One bath is slotted to be Jack-and-Jill style, while a peek at the future master shows a gold faucet from Rejuvenation. “Plumbing’s up and running!” she exclaims after her architect Emily Farnham accidentally turns on the tap.
In addition to the gilded centerpiece, the space also boasts a hillside vista. “We’ll have a little bit more of a private view than this,” she says.
Her snaps reveal a large pool that takes up a solid portion of the backyard. After checking out the “new concrete footprint,” behind the house, she and Samuel take a look at a sampling of décor ideas.
“I like all that,” she says at the collection of leather chairs, stone slabs and a gray sofa, adding, “But not that coffee table.”

The work is just getting started, Moore’s photo frenzy shows she’s enjoying her dip in the DIY world — although she might be learning the first lesson of remodeling the hard way.
“What do you think?” she says with a laugh. “Will we be in here by December?”

Miranda Lambert Reveals Raw Stories Behind the Songs: ‘Music Is Medicine’
by Nancy Kruh @ PEOPLE.com
Wed Sep 20 16:45:55 PDT 2017
Miranda Lambert has rarely talked about The Weight of These Wings, mostly letting the critically acclaimed – and intensely autobiographical – double album speak for itself since its release last November. But on Tuesday night, in an intimate all-acoustic concert featuring 15 of her 24 co-writers, Lambert opened up and allowed some of the stories behind the songs to be revealed.
“Music is medicine – it truly is,” the artist, 33, said from the stage of Marathon Music Works in Nashville.
And if that’s the case, her songwriting friends clearly were crucial in helping Lambert heal her heartbreak after her 2015 divorce from Blake Shelton. They also were the ones who helped her navigate those first formative days with her boyfriend of two years, singer-songwriter Anderson East.
“The people in this room tonight who came here to support me, they had my back the whole time,” Lambert said, “and I’m just so thankful and humbled by it.”
In all, Lambert and the songwriters performed 13 of the 24 songs that appear on the platinum-selling album. The 75-minute show, before an audience of a few hundred invited guests, will be whittled down to an hour for broadcast on PBS in February as part of the network’s Front and Center CMA Songwriter Series.
No doubt Lambert and her co-writers were most revealing in back-to-back performances of two of the album’s rawest songs, “Vice” and “Ugly Lights.”
“Do you remember the way this song started?” co-writer Shane McAnally asked Lambert about the day he and Josh Osborne (who wasn’t present) co-wrote “Vice” with her. It happened to be the day that news of the divorce broke.
“Sorta,” Lambert replied. “I remember that feeling.”
“You took your heart out of your chest and put it on the table,” McAnally recalled.
“I also brought a rolling cooler,” she quipped.
Even more, McAnally said, Lambert came with “this vulnerability of ‘let’s do this.’” As lyrics began pouring out of her, McAnally recalled, “I kept looking at you and kept saying, ‘You’re not gonna say that.’ And you’d go, ‘Yep.’”
For Lambert, the “Vice” session held meaning for “the privilege and blessing of being able to write songs and use that to, like, get you through it. And people, like Shane and Josh that day – and everybody that’s here tonight that’s a songwriter on this record – just completely embraced where I was, whatever day that was. … I was kind of all over the map, and these people were in the trenches with me.”
For “Ugly Lights,” Lambert divulged that she co-wrote the lyrics, describing an off-the-rails night at a bar, based on her previous evening’s experience.
“I did get divorced in 2015,” Lambert pointedly acknowledged before singing the song with co-writers Liz Rose and Natalie Hemby. “Just pretty much this whole record … I did start drinking a lot. And I did go to bars in midtown … And I had to pick up my car. It’d been there three days. Yeah … and I still had mascara on from the first day. So these gals came over and we were gonna write a song, and I had written it on my way home from picking up my car.”
Among the songwriters who appeared on stage was East, who joined Lambert and Hemby for “Getaway Driver.” It was, Hemby noted, the first song the couple co-wrote. After the three performed it – with East taking lead vocals – Lambert recalled how the writing session ended “all lovey-dovey” with her boyfriend, but then the two soon “got in a fight.”
“Because that’s how it goes,” she added. “And I was pissed, because that’s also how it goes.”
Lambert recalled asking East in the heat of the moment, “Are you gonna break up with me?”
East kept his calm. “I think I’ll wait 60 years,” he replied.
Lambert smiled at the memory. “So sweet.”
East’s response ended up being repurposed in the love song, “Pushin’ Time,” a co-write that Lambert, Hemby and Foy Vance then performed.
Lambert diverged only once from the album with a surprise appearance by her first co-writer, her father, Jack Lambert, who’d flown in with her mom that day.
“I threw this in at the last minute last night,” Lambert said. “I texted my mom and said, ‘Get on Southwest and come to Nashville.’”
Father and daughter performed “Greyhound Bound for Nowhere,” which appeared on 2005’s Kerosene.
“Dad and I haven’t sang this song together besides at a campfire in a long time,” Lambert said in her introduction, “but it’s really special to do it … It’s one of the first songs I ever wrote as a songwriter.”
The concert was capped with “I’ve Got Wheels,” perhaps the most hopeful song on “Weight of These Wings.”
“Basically, it says in a nutshell everything that this record said, and everything that this journey kind of amounted to because you’ve gotta roll on,” Lambert said. “You just gotta keep going.”

Gwyneth Paltrow Sounds Off on Goop Haters: 'If You Want to F--- with Me, Bring Your A Game'
by Mike Miller @ PEOPLE.com
Wed Sep 20 15:22:26 PDT 2017
Gwyneth Paltrow is taking off the gloves.
The actress, 44, has been fiercely defending her controversial lifestyle brand Goop as of late — especially since the recent launch of Goop Magazine — and she continued to taunt her haters in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m interested in criticism based on fact, not on projections,” she said. “If you want to f— with me, bring your A game.”
Earlier this month, the star-turned-wellness guru defended her brand as a surprise guest on The Late Late Show. Paltrow stood behind host James Corden as he relentlessly mocked Goop, which offers controversial health advice for women — and its new magazine, which featured Paltrow wearing nothing but mud on its debut cover.
“The cover features Gwyneth Paltrow lying down in mud,” Corden joked. “I can’t believe Gwyneth Paltrow beat out the competition to be on the cover of the new Gwyneth Paltrow magazine.”
He even mocked the cover, changing its name to Poop – “We actually fixed the cover to be more appropriate,” he quipped.
Poking even more fun at the star, Corden said, “Pretending to be down to earth has been Gwyneth Paltrow’s best performance yet.”
That’s when Paltrow chimed in, saying, “Hi, James. Just wanted to stop by.” She added, “James, I mean, to be fair, I think you’re being a little harsh. There are a lot of people that listen to the advice that we give in Goop.”
Members of Corden’s crew then proceeded to demonstrate some of Goop’s lifestyle recommendations like “grounding” — the website claims walking barefoot could cure insomnia — and “vaginal steaming” — which doctors have previously told PEOPLE is “probably not good for your vagina.”
RELATED VIDEO: Gwyneth Paltrow Says She’s Moving Away from Acting to Focus on Goop
Nevertheless, Paltrow has already opened up her first Goop brick and mortar location in Los Angeles, and is even setting her sights on TV.
During her interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Paltrow announced plans to launch a show with the working title of The Radical Wellness Show.
“I would be going into the field and talking to any number of doctors, scientists, civilians, people in crisis in Flint, Michigan, where there is something to uncover and confront about wellness,” she explained. “We would want it to feel more Vice-y in its vibe, but we’re just in the brainstorming phase.”
But don’t expect an entire Goop network.
“Dude, then I’ll be hospitalized,” she joked.

Hillary Clinton Questions Whether Melania Trump Is ‘Serious About Actually Following Through’ And Tackling Cyberbullying
by Karen Mizoguchi @ PEOPLE.com
Wed Sep 20 16:32:51 PDT 2017
Hillary Clinton believes First Lady Melania Trump has not kept her word about doing more to prevent cyberbullying.
The former First Lady, 69, questioned whether Trump is really “serious” about her commitment to the cause since she has yet to release a formal plan for her anti-cyberbullying efforts after vowing in November to be an advocate for women and children.
“No, no and, look, I don’t think anybody is doing enough on cyberbullying,” Clinton said during a roundtable interview with Mic on Tuesday when asked if she thought Trump was doing enough with her platform.
Adding, “ is a real problem and has a particularly damaging effect on young people — who are so influenced by and personally affected by what is said about them or said to them.”
Clinton said Trump would just have to ask and many would help her do more on this issue: “I think there would be a lot of people who would be willing to help her, if she were serious about actually following through.
“Because we’ve got to try the best we can to make the internet, particularly social media, understand the impact that it can have particularly on vulnerable people, particularly on susceptible young people.
“And we need more voices that are not just firing nasty shots back, but saying, ‘time out, no. This is not the way you talk about anybody, this is not how you conduct yourself. You would never do it in person.'”
Clinton said the First Lady had a chance to make a difference if she were able to follow through on it.”
RELATED VIDEO: Watch: Natasha Stoynoff Breaks Silence, Accuses Donald Trump of Sexual Attack
In June, Trump was widely criticized for choosing to side with the person being widely condemned as a bully–her husband, President Donald Trump.
The first lady offered some words of support for her husband via her spokesperson after the president launched a vicious and personal Twitter attack against Morning Joe co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, whom Trump said had a “low I.Q.,” was “crazy” and ridiculed her for allegedly having a face lift.
“When her husband gets attacked, he will punch back 10 times harder,” said spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham, per a tweet from CNN senior White House reporter Jeff Zeleny.
That same month, Grisham told PEOPLE that proposed anti-cyberbullying initiatives were still in the works: “The first lady continues to be thoughtful about it, and we look forward to announcing something in the coming weeks.”
Melania first took a stand against social media bullying during the 2016 presidential election in her first solo campaign speech since the Republican National Convention.
The mother of one promised to be an “advocate for women and for children” if her husband was elected president. “As adults, many of us are able to handle mean words, even lies. Children and teenagers can be fragile. Our culture has gotten too mean and too rough, especially to children and teenagers,” she said when she addressed supporters at a Pennsylvania rally in November.

“We entertain around her nap schedule now,” Berkus, artistic advisor for LG Studio, told PEOPLE at a breakfast on June 8, which celebrated the sleek line of high-end appliances he helped design.

But when Poppy isn’t snoozing, Berkus, 44, and husband Jeremiah Brent, 31, keep her busy with poolside play dates that are a far cry from a formal outdoor gathering.
“Our home is now filled with blow up toys from Target in the pool as opposed to margaritas,” Berkus said.

Although the guest list has been tweaked to include Poppy’s younger crowd, the design-savvy couple couldn’t be happier with their new scene.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner Reunite After His Emmys Date with Lindsay Shookus
by Mike Miller @ PEOPLE.com
Wed Sep 20 17:21:56 PDT 2017
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are keeping it together for their kids.
Just days after Affleck came to suppport his new girlfriend Lindsay Shookus at the Emmys on Sunday, the Justice League star was spotted alongside his ex-wife at a school function for their kids on Wednesday.
The duo, who have remained dedicated to keeping a united front for their kids — Violet, 11, Samuel, 5, and Seraphina Rose, 8 — dressed casually for the event and were seen walking amicably side-by-side around the school.
Affleck and Garner broke off their 10-year marriage in June of 2015, and officially filed for divorce in April. “We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time,” they said in a joint statement at the time.
Meanwhile, Affleck and Shookus, a producer on Saturday Night Live, made their relationship award show official for the first time at the 2017 Emmys on Sunday. The couple, who went public with their romance in early July, sat together at the star-studded ceremony, though they skipped the red carpet earlier. (Shookus took to the stage with her SNL colleagues when the show won outstanding variety sketch series.)
Affleck accompanied Shookus to the HBO afterparty, where they sat with Curb Your Enthusiasm‘s Larry David and Jeff Garlin. One day earlier, the love birds joined David for a pre-Emmys date in Hollywood.
The couple took their relationship public three months after Affleck and Garner, 45, coordinated their divorce filings following nearly two years of separation.
A source told PEOPLE in July that Shookus was staying at Affleck’s home. Another insider added then: “The friendship’s been going on for a very long time but this is newer waters for them. They’ve been trying to take it slow but it’s progressing quickly. Their feelings are strong.”

The two have been spending time together on both coasts since, stepping out for coffee runs, casual breakfast dates and nights out. They recently vacationed in Maine together and were spotted heading to a movie theater in N.Y.C. earlier this month.
Just last weekend, the couple was spotted getting cozy as they watched the U.S. Open men’s finals at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in N.Y.C, where Rafael Nadal defeated Kevin Anderson.

Samoas in cupcake form was a thing we never knew we needed, but now it’s the only thing we can think about.
Pillsbury just unveiled Girl Scout Cookie baking mixes, which are available in Thin Mints and Caramel & Coconut – a.k.a. Samoas – flavors. The four new mixes are for baking cupcakes, brownies and blondies — unfortunately, you won’t be able to make actual Girl Scout Cookies, because that would put a lot of 7-year-olds out of business.
