A Racist Sign At A High School Pep Rally Went Viral After It Was Shared By A Student

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

A sign displayed at an Alabama high school football rally that read "Put the Panic back in Hispanic" has gone viral on social media, prompting the school superintendent to announce he is "following up on the matter." A photo of the sign was posted to Instagram on Friday, with the caption: "Put the Panic back in Hispanic. #dontgetButthurt I'm honestly not gonna care if you do anyways so!! #sorryboutit" The Instagram post has since been deleted. The sign was displayed Friday at a Robertsdale High School football game against the Spanish Fort Toros. Jennifer Lopez Vazquez, a senior at Robertsdale, saw someone on Instagram share the photo with the sign and decided to screenshot and share it on her own Facebook page Saturday. As of Monday morning, her post had drawn more than 100 comments. "This happened yesterday at our school pep rally," Vazquez wrote along with the screenshot. "They know it's Hispanic Month. That's very disrespectful in so my ways. But it's funny to think that our school thinks it ' OKAY ' this is Honestly what white trash looks like." "The girls had posted on Instagram. Thinking it was a joke. To make fun of Hispanics. Knowing it's Hispanic Month!" Vasquez told BuzzFeed News. "But it clearly shows they have no respect! But then again the school doesn't care. That's why the students do what they do." The superintendent of Baldwin County Public Schools, which operates Robertsdale, said in a statement Saturday that he had been made aware of the picture and is working with school administrators to follow up on the matter. "We are aware of a photo that appears to be taken at a Robertsdale High School football pep rally Friday, Sept. 15 that is circulating on social media containing political banners and unacceptable language. School administrators, as well as my office, are following up on the matter," Eddie Tyler, the school superintendent, said in the statement. On Tuesday, the superintendent released another statement calling the sign "unfortunate" and further addressing the controversy, especially as it came around the debate over President Donald Trump's decision to rescind DACA, which gives temporary protection against deportation to undocumented immigrants who came to the US as children. Tyler also noted that the school system has one of one of the highest Hispanic enrollments of any school system in Alabama and that those students needed to be included in the community. "The picture of these two signs together has created a firestorm of controversy. In light of DACA and the immigration debates underway in this country I can understand why. I am not going to debate but I do want to speak to the community about who we are and what we stand for." The Baldwin County Public School System has one of the highest Hispanic enrollments of any school system in Alabama," the statement continued. "Robertsdale is among the highest in our county because of the many migrant workers who enter our country to work for local farmers in our fields. Our ESL (English as a second language program) has been recognized by the state department of education for its excellence.' Not only do we work hard to provide for these members of our community, but they are hugged on and loved every day not just by their teachers but by their friends where they go to school. Last week Baldwin County opened our storm shelters where we welcomed more than 400 evacuees from Florida. These people came from all walks of life, many of whom were Hispanic and nearly all without much financial support. Full article

Republicans plan healthcare vote; Obama and TV host denounce bill

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Republicans plan healthcare vote; Obama and TV host denounce bill By Susan Cornwell and Susan Heavey Former U.S. President Barack Obama speaks at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Goalkeepers event in Manhattan, New York, U.S., September 20, 2017. REUTERS/Elizabeth Shafiroff WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Republicans announced plans to vote next week on their latest bid to scuttle Obamacare even as a popular comedian who has become part of the U.S. healthcare debate denounced the bill and former President Barack Obama on Wednesday warned of "real human suffering." President Donald Trump, who has expressed frustration at the Senate's failure thus far to pass legislation dismantling Obama's signature legislative achievement, said "47 or 48" Republicans back the bill, which needs 50 votes for passage in the 100-seat Senate, which his Republican Party controls 52-48. "We think this has a very good chance," Trump, who made replacing Obamacare a top 2016 campaign promise, told reporters during an appearance with Egypt's president in New York. Kentucky Senator Rand Paul opposes the bill. At least five other Republicans are undecided on it: Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan of Alaska, John McCain of Arizona and Jerry Moran of Kansas. Republican Senator John Thune on Fox News said: “We’re a handful of votes short of having the 50 that we need." As they worked to gather enough votes to win, after prior legislation failed in July, congressional Republicans and the White House were on the defensive after Jimmy Kimmel used his late-night TV show to blast the proposal and call Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, one of its two sponsors, a liar. "This guy, Bill Cassidy, just lied right to my face," Kimmel said on his show on Tuesday night, referring to the senator who since May had touted a "Jimmy Kimmel test" of standards any Obamacare replacement would need to possess. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who was noncommittal on Tuesday about scheduling a vote, now intends to bring it to the Senate floor next week, said his spokesman David Popp. Republicans are using the measure Cassidy is sponsoring with fellow Senator Lindsey Graham to make one last push this year to pass legislation to roll back the 2010 Obamacare law, a goal of theirs for seven years, facing a Sept. 30 deadline. Avalere Health, a healthcare consultancy to hospitals and insurers, forecast that the bill would slash federal funding to states by $215 billion through 2026, with 34 states facing cuts. Hit hard would be Democratic-governed California and New York, which expanded the Medicaid insurance program for the poor and disabled under Obamacare, while Republican-governed Texas, which did not expand Medicaid, would be a winner, Avalere said. It remained unclear if the bill, opposed by Democrats and top medical groups and hospitals, can attract the 50 votes needed for passage, with Vice President Mike Pence ready to cast a tie-breaking vote. OBAMA WARNS In a speech in New York, Obama defended the Affordable Care Act, known informally as Obamacare, which expanded medical insurance to 20 million Americans. "So when I see people trying to undo that hard-won progress for the 50th or 60th time, with bills that would raise costs or reduce coverage or roll back protections for older Americans or people with pre-existing conditions ... it is aggravating," the Democratic former president said. "And it's certainly frustrating to have to mobilize every couple of months to keep our leaders from inflicting real human suffering on our constituents." Cassidy defended his bill, which would divvy up healthcare money as block grants to states, let them opt out of some Obamacare consumer protections and waive requirements that insurers cover certain benefits. It also would end Obamacare's Medicaid expansion. Kimmel entered the healthcare debate after revealing on his show in May that his newborn son had undergone life-saving emergency surgery for a congenital heart condition, and pleaded that no family be denied medical care because they cannot afford it. Cassidy appeared that month on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" "He said he would only support a healthcare bill that made sure a child like mine would get the health coverage he needs no matter how much money his parents make," Kimmel said on Tuesday. "Stop using my name, OK? Because I don't want my name on it. There's a new 'Jimmy Kimmel test' for you. It's called the lie detector test. You're welcome to stop by the studio and take it any time," he said to cheers from his audience. KIMMEL BLASTED Cassidy, a gastroenterologist who represents Louisiana, gave a measured response to Kimmel's remarks, telling reporters on Capitol Hill, "It was a personal attack and I can't help that." Graham blasted the comedian. "I bet he looked at some liberal talking point, bought it hook, line and sinker, and went after Bill Cassidy without talking to him. And I think that's unfair," Graham said on Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends" show. Cassidy said his proposal would protect people who are already ill, although it does let states waive an Obamacare mandate that insurers cannot charge people who have pre-existing medical conditions more than those who are healthy. "There is a specific provision that says that if a state applies for a waiver, it must ensure that those with pre-existing conditions have affordable and adequate coverage," Cassidy told CNN. Trump, in a tweet late on Wednesday, said he would not sign the bill if it did not include coverage of pre-existing conditions. "It does! A great bill," Trump said. Lost luggage - 'Mischievous' Singapore handler sent bags astray at world's best airport FILE PHOTO: A general view of the check-in area of the departure hall during a media tour of Changi Airport Terminal 4 in Singapore July 25, 2017. REUTERS/Edgar Su - SINGAPORE (Reuters) - A man who worked as a baggage handler at Singapore's Changi Airport swapped tags on hundreds of bags, sending the luggage to the wrong destinations, the Straits Times newspaper reported. Tay Boon Keh, a 63 year-old working as a baggage handler for a sub-contractor of the Changi Airport Group, was charged in court on Tuesday with 286 counts of mischief, the newspaper said. He did not explain his actions, but intends to plead guilty, it said. The next hearing is on Oct 17, when, if convicted, he can be jailed for up to one year and fined for each charge. Luggage originally bound for various parts of the world, including Perth, Manila, Frankfurt, London and San Francisco, was affected, according to court documents. Tay is believed to have changed baggage tags almost every day from November until February, they said. An airport spokesman said there was no breach of security. Nearly 59 million passengers used Changi Airport in 2016. The world's sixth busiest airport for international traffic, it flies passengers to 380 cities on over 100 airlines and was voted the world's best airport in 2017 by the Skytrax air travel consultancy. It handles about 70,000 bags per day, according to the Changi Airport Group website. (Reporting by Raju Gopalakrishnan; Editing by Michael Perry) -- © Copyright Reuters 2017-09-21

Exclusive - Trump administration prepares to ease export rules for U.S. guns

Exclusive - Trump administration prepares to ease export rules for U.S. guns By Mike Stone and Matt Spetalnick FILE PHOTO: An exhibit booth for firearms manufacturer Smith & Wesson is seen on display at the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Chicago, Illinois, October 26, 2015. REUTERS/Jim Young/File Photo WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration is preparing to make it easier for American gun makers to sell small arms, including assault rifles and ammunition, to foreign buyers, according to senior U.S. officials. Aides to President Donald Trump are completing a plan to shift oversight of international non-military firearms sales from the State Department to the Commerce Department, four officials told Reuters. While the State Department is primarily concerned about international threats to stability and maintains tight restrictions on weapons deals, the Commerce Department typically focuses more on facilitating trade. The officials from multiple agencies, speaking on condition of anonymity, say the new rules will cut government red tape and regulatory costs, boosting U.S. exports of small arms and creating jobs at home. "There will be more leeway to do arms sales," one senior administration official said. "You could really turn the spigot on if you do it the right way." The push fits both Trump's support for the gun lobby espoused on the campaign trail and his "Buy American" agenda. But critics, including some lawmakers and arms control advocates, have expressed concern that any easing of export rules could make powerful weapons of the type often used in U.S. mass shootings more accessible to criminal gangs and militant groups that Trump has vowed to fight. The administration has all but finalized a draft of the new rules, which could be sent to the White House budget office for review within days, one U.S. official said. The changes – which can be enacted without congressional approval - could be made public this fall, followed by a period of public comment, with implementation as early as the first half of next year, the officials said. The officials stressed, however, that the proposed shift in oversight was not a blanket deregulation of firearms. "The NSC is working through the interagency process with the State Department and the Department of Commerce to ensure that U.S. industries have every advantage in the global marketplace, while at the same time ensuring the responsible export of arms," said an official with the White House National Security Council. SLACK U.S. SALES The move, part of a broader Trump administration overhaul of weapons export policy that the officials say is also nearing completion, comes at a time when U.S. gun makers could use the help. Domestic gun sales have fallen significantly after soaring under President Barack Obama, when gun enthusiasts stockpiled weapons and ammunition out of fear that the government would tighten gun laws. Since Trump was elected in November, the share price for Smith & Wesson owner American Outdoor Brands Corp is down 50 percent and Sturm Ruger has fallen 26 percent. On Tuesday, following Reuters report on the administration's plans, the share prices of Sturm Ruger and American Outdoor surged as much as 18 percent. Both stand to benefit from easier export protocols, alongside Vista Outdoor and the private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, which owns Bushmaster, a brand of AR-15 assault rifle. The powerful U.S. gun lobby backed Trump in the 2016 election. The National Rifle Association spent more than $30 million in support of his candidacy. "I am going to come through for you," Trump told the NRA convention in April. The State Department licensed an estimated $4 billion in commercial firearms exports last year, of which $3.2 billion would shift to Commerce under the new arrangement, one U.S. official said. In recent years, Canada, Australia, Thailand and Saudi Arabia have been among the top destination countries for U.S. non-military firearms exports, according to U.S. Census data. The shift to Commerce could increase sales by 15-20 percent annually, predicted Lawrence Keane, senior vice president for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a firearms industry trade association. The effort to streamline U.S. small arms export controls dates back to an Obama administration initiative begun in 2009, but which was never translated into policy. The process was repeatedly stalled by a series of U.S. mass shootings, including one at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012 in which 20 children and six adults were killed by a gunman using an AR-15-style assault rifle. Assault rifles like the Bushmaster would be some of the most powerful weapons expected to be more readily available for commercial export under the new rules, which are largely in line with proposals the Obama administration had crafted. STRESS TEST Democratic Senators Ben Cardin, Dianne Feinstein and Patrick Leahy urged against any rash regulatory changes in a letter to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Friday, saying combat firearms are the "primary means of injury and destruction in civil and military conflicts throughout the world." Zlatko Hadzismajlovic, a New York attorney specializing in export controls, said the changes would be a tough "stress test" for U.S. arms policy. "The transition appears particularly ill-timed," he said, citing recent Islamist militant attacks in Europe and heightened regional tensions on the borders of NATO members such as Turkey and the Baltic states. Administration officials say they are not looking to green-light dangerous sales but that it is unrealistic to continue to hamstring U.S. gun makers in foreign markets. They point out, for instance, that AR-15 rifles are already readily available worldwide since the technology is decades old, the weapons are sold in U.S. sporting goods stores and parts can be reproduced using a 3D printer. The new rules would move both the licensing and supervision for export of most non-military firearms and ammunition to Commerce officials, who have been directed by Trump to ease the overall regulatory burden on U.S. exporters. Commercial gun exports would no longer be given the same scrutiny as missile and fighter jet sales, which often require congressional approval. "Commerce wants more exports to help reduce the trade deficit. And State wants to stop things because it sees (arms) proliferation as inherently bad," one of the officials said. "We want to make a decision that prioritizes what's more important," the official said. "This will allow us to get in the (small arms sales) game for the first time ever." The shift would officially move weapons like assault rifles and handguns from State's tightly restricted Munitions List to the Commerce Control List (CCL), which allows for more streamlined licensing for overseas sales. U.S. companies compete for foreign market share with companies such as Austrian manufacturer Glock and Italian gun maker Beretta. Police say trader not responsible in PVC pipe death - woman faces negligence charge

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Police say trader not responsible in PVC pipe death - woman faces negligence charge Picture: Sanook Police in Pathum Thani have ruled out laying charges at the door of the shop that failed to tie on a PVC pipe securely to the back of a pick-up truck. The pipe swung out as the driver went home killing a 65 year old man who was riding pillion on a motorcycle coming in the other direction. The accident happened in Sam Khok district and was caught on municipal council CCTV. Cops at the Sam Khok station refused to talk about how the four meter long pipe was tied on saying the matter would go to court. But they said it was ultimately the responsibility of the driver of the pick-up to ensure it was tied on correctly. Preeyanut, 51, has been charged with negligence causing death under article 291 43 (4). Yesterday she spoke to Sanook apologizing to the relatives of the dead man who was a neighbor. She said she asked the shop where she bought the pipe to tie it on because she had no idea how to do it herself. The first she knew about what had happened was when she heard a noise and saw people trying to flag her down. She stopped and saw in horror that 65 year old Sao was dead by the side of the road. The pipe had snapped in two. "I didn't mean this to happen," she said. "I am so sorry". Meanwhile the relatives of the dead man are not pressing their own charges as she has accepted responsibility for everything. They are all friendly neighbors. Sanook went to the shop that sold the pipe - it had been shut early. People nearby at the PTT gas station said they opened early then shut up for the day. Workpoint reporters discovered that the pipe had been tied on with "nylon rope" according to Sanook. Sanook said on leaving the shop the pipe protruded over the end of the pick-up but by the time of the accident had swung out narrowly missing the bike rider Somsak, 61, but killing his passenger on the back. Celebrities caught using drugs face uncertain fate

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Celebrities caught using drugs face uncertain fate By THE NATION BANGKOK: -- FORMER MISS TEEN THAILAND and now-disgraced actress Amelia Jacobs, who was arrested on drug-related charges early on Tuesday morning, is not the first – and will not be the last – Thai star who has seen a bright future threatened by involvement with illegal drugs. Indeed, the police blotter is littered with examples of celebrities being caught with narcotics, ending in lengthy jail sentences and hefty fines, although in some cases, canny public relations and efforts to rehabilitate have saved careers that seemed beyond repair. Just this last March, the Supreme Court upheld a verdict against Chatchaya Ramos, or “Yuyee”, formerly a popular model, sentencing her to 15 years and three months in jail for smuggling cocaine into the country in November 2012. During a search at Don Mueang International Airport, authorities found 251 milligrams of cocaine concealed in her suitcase. In addition to the jail sentence, she was also fined Bt1.5 million. However, the trail of careers in peril reaches back years. In 2013, the young actress Sutatta “Punpun” Udomsilp saw all of her contracts suspended after photos of her using meth were leaked to the public and her family admitted that she used drugs. However, the young celebrity stopped using drugs before returning to act in movies again and regaining her popularity as a teen idol. In another particularly high-profile case in December 2011, renowned rockstar Seksan “Sek Loso” Sukpimai came out to admit that he used “ice” after his estranged wife at the time, Wiphakorn Sookpimay, posted on Facebook photos of him consuming drugs. He too was able to restore his image after spending months in rehabilitation and then returning to the music arena where he has founded and managed many related businesses. He also divorced Wiphakorn. In March the previous year, the once-rising star Athip Nana, or “Ball”, was arrested after police found him in possession of marijuana and cocaine. He was sentenced to one year and three months in jail, fined Bt12,000 and ordered to enter rehab. However, his sentence was suspended for two years. In the same year, a female comedian known as Nok Choenyim was arrested for trying to smuggle 560 milligrams of “ice”, 580 milligrams of marijuana and drug paraphernalia from Cambodia to Thailand. It was the second time she was charged for such an offence. Going all the way back to 2004, the popular young singer Joyce Triumph Kingdoms and her boyfriend were arrested and charged with possession of 4,000 “yaba” amphetamine tablets with intent to sell. She was sentenced to eight years and one month in jail and only freed in 2013 after serving the sentence. In May the same year, Worayot Boontongtum, known also as “Pat Powerpat”, was a rising star when he was arrested in possession of 3,000 ecstasy tablets, four bottles of ketamine and a bag of marijuana. He was found guilty of having drugs for personal use and with intent to sell and sentenced to 42 years in jail. Not all of the collapsing careers were directly linked to an arrest. In 2002, the life of the former supermodel Rojjana “Yui” Phetkanha, who had represented Thailand on the international catwalk, turned upside down as she reportedly became addicted to drugs, resulting in her losing her job and an income estimated to be about Bt50 million a year. In 1997, two Thai stars were separately apprehended for being involved in narcotics. Actress Namfon Kullanut failed a urine test, but her tearful explanation that a friend had put ecstasy into her drink, which she had not consumed willingly, resulted in a court dismissing her case. She took a break from work but eventually returned to join the ranks of popular stars. In the same year, police raided the residence of popular singer Touch Na Takuatung, catching him red-handed using marijuana. Thailand’s star-maker RS Promotion subsequently suspended his contracts. With no shortage of examples of celebrities caught in a scandal, Amelia now faces not only a lengthy judicial process but also the court of public opinion. Both verdicts will decide whether drugs have ruined another celebrity career. Source: http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/national/30327248 -- © Copyright The Nation 2017-09-21

Anti-Islam extremist monk forced to disrobe

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Anti-Islam extremist monk forced to disrobe By The Nation BANGKOK: -- Extremist anti-Islam monk Phra Apichart Punnajanto, who last month posted online videos that harshly condemn Islam, was forced to disrobe on Wednesday. Apichart was arrested at a temple in Songkhla on Tuesday and detained for interrogation by police at a military camp. He was then brought to be defrocked at Wat Benchamabophit, or the Marble Temple, in Bangkok where he was head of monk preachers. It was believed that the monk was taken into custody because of videos he had posted online. In 2015, Phra Apichart made headlines for using his Facebook account to urge Buddhists to burn one mosque for every monk killed by southern insurgents. “If a Buddhist monk dies from being shot at, or from an explosion in the South at the hands of Malayu bandits, a mosque should be burned, starting from the northern part of Thailand southwards,” he posted. The term “Malayu bandits” refers to Muslim insurgents fighting the Thai state in the three southernmost provinces and four districts in Songkhla, where about 80 per cent of the two million residents identify themselves as Malay. Following pressure from the authorities and the Supreme Sangha Council, Phra Apichart decided to close his Facebook account temporarily at that time. Rescuers get closer to trapped girl as Mexico quake toll passes 220

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Rescuers get closer to trapped girl as Mexico quake toll passes 220 By Michael O'Boyle and Ana Isabel Martinez Rescuers work at the site of a collapsed building after an earthquake in Mexico City, Mexico September 20, 2017. REUTERS/Henry Romero MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Rescuers toiled to wrest a young girl from the rubble of a partially collapsed school in Mexico City on Wednesday, offering a small glimmer of hope more than a day after a devastating earthquake killed at least 224 people. Television stations broadcast the nailbiting, hours-long rescue attempt live after crews at the school in the south of the city reported seeing the girl move her hand. They threaded a hose through debris to get her water. The girl's name was not made public, but her family waited in anguish nearby. Rescuers moved slowly, erecting makeshift wooden scaffolding to prevent rubble from crumbling further and seeking a path to the child through the unstable ruins. They implored bystanders to be quiet to better hear calls for help. It was part of the careful search for dozens of victims feared buried beneath the Enrique Rebsamen school, where officials reported 21 children and 4 adults dead after Tuesday's quake. Hundreds of buildings were destroyed by the country's deadliest earthquake in a generation. "We have a lot of hope that some will still be rescued," said David Porras, one of scores of volunteers helping the search at the school, for children aged 3 to 14. "But we're slow, like turtles," he said. The magnitude 7.1 quake, which killed at least 93 people in the capital, struck 32 years to the day after a 1985 earthquake that killed thousands. Mexico is also still reeling from a powerful tremor that killed nearly 100 people in the south of the country less than two weeks ago. Emergency crews, volunteers and bystanders toiled on Wednesday using dogs, cameras, motion detectors and heat-seeking equipment to detect victims who may still be alive more than 24-hours after the quake. Reinforcements also began to arrive from countries including Panama, Israel and Chile, local media reported. Hundreds of neighbours and emergency workers pulled rubble from the ruins of the school with their bare hands under the glare of floodlights a full day after the shock. Three survivors were found at around midnight as volunteer rescue teams known as "moles" crawled deep under the rubble. By Wednesday morning, the workers said a teacher and two students had sent text messages from within the rubble. Parents clung to hope that their children were alive. RESCUED KIDS Overnight, volunteers with bullhorns shouted the names of rescued kids so that waiting family members could be reunited with them. "The priority continues to be rescuing people from collapsed buildings and taking care of the injured," said President Enrique Pena Nieto. "Every minute counts." Pena Nieto has declared three days of mourning. The president has been unusually visible since the two earthquakes, a sign of the political sensitivity of disaster relief less than a year before the next presidential election. The government’s widely panned response to the 1985 quake caused upheaval in Mexico, which some credited with weakening the 71-year rule of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Pena Nieto, the PRI's first president since it lost power in 2000, hopes to elect a party successor next year. On Wednesday, the president travelled to the state of Morelos, just south of the capital, where 71 people died, to survey damage. In Puebla state, site of the earthquake's epicentre, at least 43 died. The earthquake toppled dozens of buildings, tore gas mains and sparked fires across the city and other towns in central Mexico. Falling rubble and billboards crushed cars and nearly 5 million homes, businesses and other facilities were without power at one point. Although authorities and property owners will need time to fully assess the damage, initial reports suggest that collapses were limited mostly to buildings that predate the 1985 quake, after which stricter building codes were enacted. But even wealthier parts of the capital, including the central Condesa and Roma neighbourhoods, were badly damaged as older buildings buckled. Because bedrock is uneven in a city built on a drained lake bed, some districts weather quakes better than others. "The central part of Mexico City, in the lake bed, is always going to be a complicated place to build," said Rodrigo Suarez, chief operating officer at Mexico City-based apartment developer Hasta Capital. "These old buildings (may) survive an earthquake or two or three, but since they weren't built to modern code, there's always going to be a risk in major earthquakes.” In Puebla, where the U.S. Geological Survey said the epicentre lay some 100 miles (158 km) southwest of the capital, parts of colonial-era churches crumbled. In the town of Atzala, a row of coffins lined the street outside a church where the roof collapsed, killing 11 worshippers inside. VOLCANO ERUPTS TOO Around the same time that the earth shook, Mexico's Popocatepetl volcano, visible from the capital on a clear day, had a small eruption. On its slopes, a church in Atzitzihuacan collapsed during Mass, killing 15 people. In Rome, Pope Francis said he was praying for Mexico, a majority Catholic country. "In this moment of pain, I want to express my closeness and prayers to all the beloved Mexican people," he said. U.S. President Donald Trump said in a tweet on Tuesday: "God bless the people of Mexico City. We are with you and will be there for you." Trump and Pena Nieto spoke at length on Wednesday, according to the White House. Some volunteers in the capital, home to some 20 million people, expressed frustration at the disorganization among military and civilian emergency services, which competed over who would lead the rescue efforts. Javier Gonzalez, a 21-year-old civil engineering student, spent the night along with two classmates helping at one of the collapsed buildings in the Roma neighbourhood, then moved on to the Enrique Rebsamen school early Wednesday where they saw officials bickering over the rescue effort. "The firefighters and emergency services personnel were more worried about who was in charge," said Gonzalez. Small crowd expected for Yingluck verdict reading

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Small crowd expected for Yingluck verdict reading By THE NATION File photo BANGKOK: -- Police anticipate that 300 to 400 supporters will travel to the Supreme Court in Bangkok next Wednesday, when a verdict in the case against fugitive ex-prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra will be read, almost certainly in her absence. The Metropolitan Police Bureau will take care of security around the court compound on the day without asking for additional forces from other police divisions, said bureau chief Pol Lt-General Sanit Mahathavorn on Wednesday. “There is the sheerest possibility that the ex-PM will show up on the day. Consequently, not many of her supporters are expected to be there,” Sanit said. “Still, the bureau will equip our full forces then.” The verdict regarding Yingluck’s alleged negligence in preventing corruption in the implementation of her government’s rice-pledging scheme was due to be read on August 25. However, it was postponed when Yingluck’s lawyer told the judges that she was “sick” and could not make it to court. While Yingluck still nowhere to be seen, the verdict will eventually be read out on September 27. If found guilty, the former prime minister could face up to 10 years in jail a lifetime ban from politics. According to informed sources, the Police Special Branch Bureau estimated that about 300 supporters from Bangkok will be present on Wednesday. Dam added to Chao Phraya flood plan

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Dam added to Chao Phraya flood plan By PRATCH RUJIVANAROM THE NATION Engineer questions purpose and scope of Bt18-billion project in Ayutthaya. A PLAN to build a new dam in the main tributary of the Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya has been revealed by the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) as part of its Bang Ban-Bang Sai drainage canal project. Following Cabinet approval in principle for its flood and drought prevention plan for the Chao Phraya River Basin on Tuesday, the RID disclosed that the drainage canal would be one of the most important projects to solve flooding problems in Ayutthaya province. It was further stated yesterday that a dam would be constructed to divert water to the newly built canal and enhance water management in the lower Chao Phraya River. Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Irrigation Project director Bowdaeng Thakaew said the Bang Ban-Bang Sai drainage canal project had not yet officially started, as the RID had to wait for full project approval from the Cabinet next week, adding that the department had already laid out a draft plan for the project. “The main project will be 23-kilometre-long canal, which will run from the Chao Phraya River in Bang Ban district and empty into the Chao Phraya River in Bang Sai district. This canal will have a water-drainage capacity of around 1,200 cubic metres per second, which would effectively solve the water drainage problem at the narrow point of the Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya,” Bowdaeng said. He added that the new dam would be a part of the project. “We have to build a new barrage dam in the river to divert water to the new canal. This dam will also help improve water management in the lower reach of the Chao Phraya River, because the most downstream dam in the main tributary of the river is the Chao Phraya Dam in Chai Nat.” He added that the new canal and dam would solve flood problems in Ayutthaya. The canal was meant to boost water drainage from the Chao Phraya in flood season and reduce the severity of floods in the province, where there are many industrial estates and major investments. Bowdaeng said the dam would also benefit water management and be a useful irrigation tool during both flood and drought periods. The estimated budget for the project was Bt18 billion. According to the RID, the Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya is narrower than in its upstream and downstream sections. As natural water flow can only reach 1,200 cubic metres per second, Ayutthaya often faces river overflow and floods during the wet season. A water resource engineering professor from Kasetsart University, Sitang Pilailar, said the project could mitigate flood problems in Ayutthaya. However, judging on the size and budget, the project might be too big and expensive for flood prevention task only, she added. “I don’t know the real purpose of the new dam in this project. If we want to divert water to the new canal, we can just install water sluices,” Sitang said. She added that a project of this size and scope would have to pass an environmental impact assessment (EIA) study. She also asked how the RID planned to conduct maintenance on the project during the dry season, because such a canal could be damaged if there were low water levels. Bowdaeng said the RID would start detailed planning and conduct an EIA with the view to starting construction in 2019 if the Cabinet approves the plan next week. Usurious bank fees on an international wire

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Hi guys, I just made a transfer from my home bank in Europe to my recently opened Kasikorn Saving account here in bkk. First i got surpised how fast it took for me to get the monry, less than 2 hours, but then, my second surprise was how much money they charged (stole) me: they basically charged me 5000thb for a bit less than 340'000... I've been calling my home bank twice, and they told me they just charged me 150thb, and then went to a kasikorn branch, where a guy on the phone told me that they charge 2.5% (which is not possible, as it would be more than 5000thb) and 500thb, and that they used the visa exchange rate (???)... I'm more than furious, as my goal by opening an account here was saving on the atm fees... So, do you guys have any ideas or explanation on why i got charged so much, and maybe on what i could do to protest and get some of the money back? Thanks in advance.

My Thai Massage Entitlement

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Now at Bkk gate 75 ..waiting for 16:20 flight to Udon Thani. Signboard says a 10 minute delay. My first visit to UTH; read on if you wish to keep me company: (1) The Immigration chap told me about this rule. I can only have 180 Thai massage sessions in a calendar year. (2) Feel slightly sorry for him. Think he is the same chap during my last visit. He was manning the general queue when i was trying to get out for the transfer to Nakon Phanom.* (3) Anyway; he was much more friendly this time. Possibly less harassed with air force people grabbing his job or a PRC pissing in front. (4) Maybe he was getting even**, thought i saw a tricky smile when he was telling about the warning.. Seems like i used up 180 entitlement. (5) Anyway, he was helpful. Told me i can get another foot massage...× 60. I need to leave Thailand..find a embassy..and get a TR. Therapy ?Related excuse chit. --- *chicken & egg? Places like UTH/Phuket will get more tourist money with a dedicated booth? Just wondering if Bkk elite with Phuket condos are trying to keep the money rather than spread to less well-known provinces? **i gather they function on a binary Yes-No system. Anything in-between gives anxiety. Great that he decided Yes ... else really wonder about the various scenarios. Does thaivisa people know or it is a blackbox?

Amateur Artist Turns Old Flip-Flops into Amazing Action Figures

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Elmer Padilla, a young construction worker from Manila, Philippines, recently shot to internet fame after photos of his hand-made action figures went viral on multiple social networks. While being able to make your own action figures is an impressive talent in itself, what really caught people’s attention was the medium used by the Filipino amateur artist – old flip-flops. Photos posted on a Facebook group dedicated to Filipino art show Elmer Padilla cutting colorful flip-flops on a sidewalk using knives and scissors, and assembling them into intricate toys like Transformers, Predator and Marvel superheroes. As you can see in the photos, his creations are nothing short of awe-inspiring. A father to 2 daughters, Elmer Padilla works as a construction worker in the village of Imus, but also supplements his income by making and selling flip flop action figures. Impressed by his talent, his friend Adrian Soriano Bernabe shared photos of Elmer’s work on the GUHIT Pinas Facebook group, where they got nearly 3,000 likes in just a couple of days. From there, the photos wound up on the front page of Reddit, where they reached a whopping 86,000 upvotes. Full article

Do You Apologize Too Much?

by Margaret Manning @ Fashion, Hair, Makeup for Older Women, Senior Dating, Travel

Do you feel like you apologize too much... even for things that aren't your fault? I do! In fact, this is one habit that I've tried to break over the years. Why? Because, if everything is worthy of an apology, then saying "I'm sorry" loses its meaning. It's also not great for your self-confidence to be constantly looking for things that you did wrong! So, today, I want to offer a few tips for getting your apologies under control. I hope that you find them useful! Do you feel like you apologize too much... even for things that aren't your fault? Do you think that apologizing for small things that we can't control "cheapens" our other apologies? Why or why not?

Three corn silo workers "gassed" in freak accident in northern Thailand

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Three corn silo workers "gassed" in freak accident in northern Thailand Picture: Sanook CHIANG RAI: -- Three Burmese workers cleaning a silo for storing corn in Chiang Rai are believed to have been killed by a build up of gas. The accident happened in Chiang Saen at the Pa Sak Noi estate where Lek, 41, Soo, 46. and Saikam, 35, had worked for many years. No one noticed that the three men - responsible for the ovens and cleaning at the facility - had entered some pipes. Later they were found suffocated and medics on the scene presumed ahead of a formal autopsy that they had succumbed to gas. The silo owner Sanga said that residual water in the pipes from rains had likely caused a build-up of gas, reported Sanook. TAT targets more Japanese women and first-time visitors

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

TAT targets more Japanese women and first-time visitors By The Nation Promoting more Japanese first-time and female visitors to Thailand is a core theme of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT)’s marketing presence at Tourism Expo Japan (TEJ) 2017. Formerly known as the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) Tourism Expo, the country’s largest trade event will be held in Tokyo from Thursday until September 24. Exhibitors from 150 countries and regions around the world and more than 1,180 companies will be in attendance. Nearly 50,000 trade visitors and 136,000 consumers are expected to visit. This year will be an important year to promote Thailand as a preferred destination for Japanese travellers, as the two nations are celebrating 130 years of diplomatic relations. Japan is one of seven countries expected to generate more than one million arrivals this year. With the Japanese economy showing strong signs of recovery, TAT believes the number of Japanese travelling abroad will soon rise significantly. Thailand welcomed 1.4 million visitors from Japan in 2016, a 5 per cent increase over 2016. In January-August 2017, Japanese arrivals to Thailand totalled 890,317, up 6.07 per cent over the same period last year. TAT expects the total number of Japanese arrivals to hit 1.5 million this year, generating tourism income of around 214 billion yen (Bt63.5 billion). At TEJ 2017, the Thai team will organise several events to clarify the situation in Thailand to Japanese travel trade buyers, brief them on the marketing and promotion strategies in Japan, and introduce new products, services and activities of interest to Japanese visitors. The 108-square-metre Thai pavilion will bear the themes of “local experience” and “women travelling to Thailand”. The 10 Thai exhibitors in the Thai pavilion are Asiatique the Riverfront; Blue Elephant Cooking School and Restaurant; Urbana Hospitality; Ramada Plaza Menam Riverside Bangkok; King Power International; The Ashlee Hotel Patong, Phuket; Thai Airways International; Olonade Travel Thailand; Mae Jo Golf Club and Resort; and the Duangtawan Hotel. TAT will launch its “Meet the NEW Thailand” campaign by changing the image of Thailand in the Japanese market as a destination for females, young people, work groups and first visitors. The campaign will feature Japanese Idol pop group Nogizaka 46. A workshop on targeting the female market will also be organised. TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn said, “TAT is seeking to attract more middle to high-end visitors by targeting first-time visitors, as well as university students and newly working women. Also, we are expanding the activities and range of Thai destinations of interest to repeat visitors.” Source: http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/business/30327238 -- © Copyright The Nation 2017-9-20

Prayut’s visit to US may happen soon

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Prayut’s visit to US may happen soon By THE NATION Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha should be able to visit the United States by early next month, Deputy Government Spokesperson Lt-General Werachon Sukondhapatipak said on Wednesday. Prayut was invited to make the visit during a phone call with President Donald Trump in April. The riming of the visit would have to work around the royal ceremonies scheduled for late next month, Werachon said. The Foreign Ministry was working to confirm a schedule for the visit, which Thailand expects to include discussions on the economy, security and natural disasters, the deputy spokesperson said. While the US might take some to settle the arrangements, Werachon stressed that the visit “will surely take place”. America’s call for Asean countries to press North Korea on its nuclear weapons tests may also be on the agenda for any talks. Using US light dimmers in Thailand?

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

We are building a new house and I would like to use Z Wave dimmer and switches from the US. The electric guy said they would work fine but isn't the power here 220V vs the 120V common in the US? If you know any good places to buy Z Wave switches in Thailand that would be great too and save me the hassle of buying them overseas.

Mob of angry wives strip 'mistress' in street after she was caught 'red-handed' with one of their husbands

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

A woman was stripped naked in the street by a gang of middle-aged women after she was accused of sleeping with one of their husbands. The clip, which has been shared across social media with more than a million views , was filmed in China and titled "When catching mistresses, your best friends come in handy". The suspected 'home wrecker' was slapped and kicked on the ground in a crowded public area and the group of women appear to show her no mercy. The husband of one of the gang is believed to have been the mistress's lover, and the wife decided to teach the young woman a lesson after catching her red-handed. Throughout the violent incident, a few passers-by can be seen trying to stop the women, but the helpless mistress still has her hair tugged by the group of friends. The clip ends with the young woman's clothing almost all ripped off as the women do their best to shame her in public. Full article and video

Test drive a Honda City

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Is this the norm in Thailand? I went into the Honda dealership in Sakon Nakhon and said I was interested in a new 1.5 Honda City .I asked to test drive the Honda City and they said sorry, we don't have one to test but you can test a Honda Jazz ,it is also a 1.5. I was shocked .I turned to my wife and said OMG. My wife didn't show any expression but she did say that many Thai's don't test drive and that they go to the showroom to look at the inside and specs and talk to the salesperson for discounts and then place a order. I came across a similar weird situation when the previous owner of the townhouse I rented sold the townhouse without the new owner doing a walk through. Both of these circumstances are weird and frustrating .I can't imagine any of this foolishness happening in the States.

11 best make-up brushes

11 best make-up brushes

The Independent

It is not often that one draws positive links between make-up and construction (hello cement foundation) but in both it is true that a workman is only as good as his tools; there is only so far you can get with finger-painting and those horrible teenage sponge applicators. Brushes can be pricey, but choose well and a simple set of eight or so multitaskers will tackle every job you can dream up. High-quality brushes should last for decades without shedding and save you money in the long run.

Thai Customs and Immigration - Are They Serious ?

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

I recently purchased an Omron BF511 Family Body Composition Monitor (essentially fancy body weight scales) on eBay. The seller is in the UK, so it was sent from there to Thailand via DHL. To my amazement, I got an email from DHL last Friday stating that Customs has requested I get an Importation License from the Central Bureau Of Weights and Measures before they will release the parcel. This takes bureaucratic retardation to a new level. Now I only bought one for these things for the princely sum of ninety-three pounds plus courier charges, and I have no intention of buying more than one. Has anybody else come across this lunacy in Thailand when buying things online? Mind you I should have known better, I bought some Silicon Lube from the US (to use on my squeaky doors, cough) which was couriered in by UPS and Thai Customs wanted me to supply them with an MSDS (Materials Safety Data Sheet) from the manufacturer, needless to say, the doors are still squeaky. What astounds me, even more, is that other items I have bought online that have been sent through the post get no attention whatsoever.

Foreign dad visits former Miss Teen Thailand daughter on drugs charge

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Foreign dad visits former Miss Teen Thailand daughter on drugs charge Picture: Thai Rath BANGKOK: -- The actress famous for her catchphrase "Mum's Coming" (mae maa) had a different version yesterday when her dad popped in to Sai Mai police station. Dad Hannes Jacobs came armed with some cakes and fresh clothes for his daughter. Amelia "Amy" Jacobs, 28, was arrested Tuesday with her 40 year old boyfriend Punyawat with a stash of "ice" or crystal meth and ecstasy tablets. Dad stayed for 20 minutes then spoke to investigators but refused to have a word with the assembled press baying for news. Without explaining their source Thai Rath said that Amy's mum has promised to spirit her away abroad when she gets out of this mess. But if Amy is convicted she could face years behind bars. Amy is currently a big hit on Channel 7's series Monkey Daughter (Thida Wanorn) but in 2006 she won the Miss Teen Thailand title. Meanwhile Amy has reportedly refused to use the station loos and asked for a fan because she is a bit hot. Thai Rath reported that the arrest of the pair was done by 191 special branch led by Surachet Hakpan - not under the auspices of the tourist police as reported by a well known English language newspaper. They intimated that both Amy and Punyawat were giving conflicting stories about where the drugs came from. Amy said they belonged to a friend who she couldn't name who dropped them off on Sunday for looking after. While Punyawat said they belonged to someone called "Nat". They both seemed to have changed their tune from Tuesday when police said they had admitted to dealing in drugs. Source: Thai Rath -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2017-09-21
